More Kids than They Can Afford

If you really want to see something sickening, try tuning in to the reality show “18 Kids and Counting” some time. Or follow the affairs of octo-mom Nadya Suleman. How can these people have so many kids? So many that it make it nearly impossible to treat the children as the human beings they are? It’s a movement called Quiverfull; a cross denominational Protestant movement that is spreading through the homeschooling programs and teaches that women are mere baby making machines doing their duty of popping out as many children as possible as new followers of Christ. The term comes from Psalm 127

Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They shall not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

Sound a little like it’s envisioning using your kids as weapons? Yep. Of course, it was written by a war faring stone age society that did treat their kids as weapons. So how do modern Americans, people who should be more compasionate than this, fall into this movement? I’m not even going to try to sum it up. Here’s an article on Salon. It’s fascinating and sickening at the same time. It was written by Kathryn Joyce and is a bit of a preview of her book, Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement.

I really feel sorry for these kids, being raised as nothing more than tools in this cult like mentality.
